This week a group of WMHS students attended a two day Crisis Communication Conference, Managing the Message, in Pendleton. Local and International communicators shared their experience on how to "build better" communication practices to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disaster and crisis response. Wednesday students listened to presenters and networked with local and regional agencies. Students were tasked with grading speakers on their topics and gave the top presenter the Youth Choice award at the evening dinner. Truth be told, a cool Australian accent might have given one presenter a few extra points over the New Zealander. Thursday students participated in the table top exercise exposing them to real world crisis scenarios and they learned how those would play out. Students engaged with Incident Management teams, local-state-federal Oregon elected officials, local emergency planning committee and other agencies throughout the day. UK International crisis expert, Chris Webb, led our students in the table top exercise helping them understand how this would play out in real life and wanting the next generations input on how they think it should be handled. At the end of the table top exercise a press conference was reenacted and our WMHS students were the journalists asking all of the questions. A special thank you to Dustie Pickard to bringing this opportunity to the WMHS School to Careers program. We thank you for commitment to exposing our students to new careers and opportunities.
