1997 Girls Track and Field Team – Head Coach Loran Monaco

  • Team Members:  Luanna Baumann, Denise Baumann, Michelle Baumann, Amy Clore, Bethany Hansell, Misty Krey, Lori Monaco, Amber Weatherspoon and CaSandra Zeller each scored points at the district meet.
  • The 1997 Girls Track and Field Team won every track meeting during the regular season by a wide margin.  It was not uncommon for them to place first in ten or more events at a meet.
  • It was a total team effort that brought home the 1997 Girls District Championship Trophy and qualified six members to compete at the state meeting in multiple events.
  • Denise Baumann, Amy Clore, Bethany Hansell, Misty Krey, Lori Monaco and Amber Witherspoon advanced to the Oregon State Track and Field Meet.  Weston McEwen Girls placed 2nd in State earning 48 points, just 7 points behind Catlin Gable.
    • Amy Clore Finished 5th in the 100 meters, 5th in the 200 meters and 6th in the 400 meters.
    • Lori Monaco was the State Champion in the 1500 meters and the 3000 meters.
    • Amber Witherspoon finished 4th in the Javelin and 2nd in the 300 meter hurdles.
    • The 4x4 relay of Amy Clore, Misty Krey, Lori Monaco and Amber Weatherspoon finished 5th in State.  4x4 Relay Alternates Denise Baumann and Bethany Hansell worked with the relay team and were ready and able to step in at any time they were needed.

  • The 1997 Girls Track Team represented Weston McEwen High School and this community with pride and responsibility.  They held themselves to a high standard on and off the track. 

Coach Loran Monaco

  • Graduated from Anacorda High School
    • Distance runner for 4 years
    • Member of a State Championship Cross-Country Team
  • Attended University of Montana
  • Maintenance Supervisor for the Athena Weston School District for 30 years until his retirement. Now owns his own business, Monaco Building Solutions
  • Crystal Apple Award Winner
  • OSAA 25 year Pin and Acknowledgement
  • Weston McEwen track and field has had at least one or more athletes compete at the state meet every year for the last 25 years plus.
  • Earned a team trophy for 3rd place  in Cross-Country in 1994 and 4 team trophies in track and field – 4th Place, 3rd Place, 2nd Place and then in 2017 a Boys State Championship Trophy. 
  • Coach Monaco and his athletes have earned over 130 state medals ranging from 1st to 8th place. 
  • 13 individual state champions in events such as the 100, 200, 800, 1500, 3,000, High Jump, Long Jump, Javelin, and Shot Put.
  • Coach Monaco is most proud of the life lessons his athletes learn while on the field.  Lessons about integrity, hard work, accountability, and simply being tolerant and good to one another. 
  • After years of coaching, Coach Monaco’s athletes still reach out to him to thank him, to invite him and Patti (wife) to their wedding, college graduation and to notify them on the birth of a child.
